What to expect for the rest of the year?

What to expect for the rest of the year?

Since the beginning of the year, markets were often bullish, and especially volatile. What to expect for the rest of the year?

Here are highlights that caught the attention of National Bank’s team of economists:

Canada

The economy and the job market should remain dynamic. Strong U.S. demand, a weak loonie and the elimination of aluminum and steel tariffs are likely to boost exports.

United States

Odds are the current expansion—which started a decade ago—will become the longest in U.S. history by the end of the year. However, the escalation of the U.S.-China trade war could affect business investment and growth. In the short term, consumers have the potential to offset these negative effects thanks to a vibrant labour market that drives their income.

World

Tariffs between the two biggest global economies may slow down international trade. Should they persist or increase, it could depress global growth prospects by the end of 2019.

In this context, markets remain subject to volatility. While it is difficult to anticipate their moods, it is still possible to mitigate volatility's impact by leveraging the diversification and optimal asset allocation in your portfolio.
